What Causes Breast Fibroids
- Also medically known as fibrocystic breast disease or mammary dysplasia, breast fibroids are benign nodules that cause discomfort in the breasts. The alterations in hormonal levels during a woman’s menstruation cycle may cause fibroids to develop.
- Another possible cause is the accumulation of fluids within the cells. Although the possibility is rather rare, fibroids may proceed to develop into a malignant tumor, otherwise known as breast cancer. Because of this possibility, women should have regular breast examination.
- The hormones considered main culprits to the development of fibroids are known as estrogen and progesterone.
- Other possible hormonal imbalances may also be due to prolactin, which is largely responsible for the production and excretion of breast milk in nursing mothers. It is also responsible for the regulation of the thyroid hormone, growth factor, and insulin. If the normal process of development is inhibited, breast fibroids may develop.
Breast Fibroids Prevention
Around a third of women develop breast fibroids when they reach 30 years old. These may be experienced as discomfort and dull pains surrounding the breasts. At times, the discomfort felt may even interfere with daily activities. Feelings of pain, heaviness, swelling, and burning sensation may be felt around the area. Tenderness may be accompanied by discharge and lumps. The best way to prevent the formation of these is by regular breast examination when the woman reaches 20 years of age. Women may prevent these from growing by doing the following:
- Monthly examination for any tissue shaped irregularly.
- Mammography and ultrasound tests may help diagnose the presence of the disease.
Breast Fibroids Alternative Treatment
Therapies are available, but most are done with the use of either surgery or strong medications.
- Dietary changes. A low fat diet with no caffeine, dairy foods, meats, refined sugars, and concentrated starches may greatly prevent the formation of fibroids and other lumps in the body. Likewise, foods that are smoked, salted, fried, and preserved are not beneficial at all. Foods rich in nutritional yeast, and vitamin B may help prevent fibroid development. These include high fiber foods and cruciferous vegetables.
- Natural diuretics. Watermelon, cucumbers, and dark green leafy vegetables contain significant amounts of fluids. Consumption of these combined with loads of water intake may help flush out harmful toxins and chemicals.
