Hives is another term for an allergic skin reaction. The onset is usually sudden, typically minutes after ingestion or contact with an allergen. This condition is neither gender nor age specific. Anyone who happens to acquire allergies may experience it. Hives appear as smooth, slight, flat-topped elevations. These bumps are either called welts or wheals. These are comparably slightly redder than the unaffected parts of the skin. As with any allergic reaction, the usual complaint with hives is severe itching. These usually resemble mosquito bites.
Hives is perhaps the most common form of a rash.
Severe Hives Causes
Upon contact with irritants known as allergens, the body releases specific chemicals which include bradykinin, histamine, prostaglandin, and leukotriene. The allergen is perceived as a foreign substance. Because the cells do not recognize these, the body’s immune system sends a set of cells to combat the substance. In some people, the effect may even be manifested as allergies, and cause severe hives. The chemicals work on blood vessels and affected tissues. Triggers may include the following:
- Infections. Children are prone to viral illnesses. Diseases such as chickenpox and measles may initially manifest as hives.
- Allergies. Food, cosmetics, medication, soaps, pet dander, and even clothing may cause hypersensitivity reactions.
- Bites. Insect stings may lead to the formation of small smooth elevations in the skin.
- Blood transfusion. Because the blood of other people may contain different sets of antigen, the body may not accept these.
- Environmental factors. These include heat, water, cold, sunlight, and pressure.
Home Remedies for Severe Hives
It is best to relieve severe urticaria with the use of natural remedies. These include:
- Oatmeal. Tub baths filled with oatmeal will help relieve the itching sensation. Pounds of oatmeal help soothe the skin and prevent frequent bouts of pruritus.
- Rose water. This can be used as foot wash or foot soak. Rose water can soothe the burning sensation associated with intense itching.
- Apples. Raw minced apples can be used as poultice over areas affected by athlete’s foot.
- Aloe Vera. Apart from moisturizing the skin, aloe can help relieve incessant itching.
- Apple Cider Vinegar. When sprayed to the affected area, hives can be observed to fade within just 5 minutes.
- Epsom Salt
- Ice packs
- Cornstarch. Soaking the affected area using a mixture of cornstarch and baking soda can help relieve the itching associated with severe hives.
