What Are The Causes And Home Remedies For Dry Cracked Heels

People always take care of their face, but they seldom pay any attention to their feet. Dry heels are one such condition that is often a result of ignorance and lack of attention towards feet care. Prolonged dryness of feet may subsequently lead to cracks and fissures in the heels. It is at this stage, people feel regretful for being negligent. Dry and cracked heels are associated problems. The skin along the side of heels when becomes dry, it can easily crack due to body weight.

Dry heels may not be a harmful condition, but when it leads to cracks and fissures, it becomes a painful condition.

If the fissures are deep they may bleed. It also poses a risk for secondary bacterial infection. People suffering from diabetes should always try to prevent dryness and cracks of their heels and feet, lest the secondary infection may be very difficult to get cured.

What Are The Common Causes Of Dry Heels?

Dryness and cracks usually occur in both the heels, but sometime it may only affect one foot. Usually the problem when attended does not resolve permanently and it may often recur. Here are some of the common causes for dry heels:

  • Lack of moisture in the environment. During extreme of cold or heat, the skin tends to dry due to reduced moisture in the air. Dry heels is not an exception, it can affect whole body skin.
  • Some people are prone to have naturally dry skin. It is a condition called Xerosis. They are at risk of getting cracks and fissures on their feet.
  • Wearing foot wears that do not cover the back of heels, or walking bare foot for prolonged time can cause dryness of feet and heels. Especially when you walk bare foot during winter or in air-conditioned environment.
  • Certain skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis can cause dryness of heels.
  • Housewives and maids are at risk of suffering from dry heels and feet. Exposing your feet continuously in water can rob the natural oils meant to keep the skin moist and healthy. This leads to dryness of heels.
  • As the person age, the skin of heels tends to become thick and lose its elasticity.
  • Fungus infection also called athletes feet can lead to dryness and heel cracks.
  • Dry heels can occur in a pregnant woman due to the change in posture, and weight gain.
  • Omega 3 fatty acid and zinc deficiency is also known to cause dry heels.

Home Remedies For Dry Cracked Heels

Foot care is as important as taking care of any other organs of the body. Try to prevent dry heels and feet in first place and this is not very difficult. Even if there is dryness and cracks there are home remedies that can easily treat it and prevent further complications such as secondary bacterial infection.

  • Apply any vegetable oil, coconut oil, almond oil, etc on your heels after washing your feet. This you can do it at night before sleeping. Apply it regularly until the skin becomes smooth and cracks heal.
  • While bathing soak your feet in warm water for 5 minutes daily. You can add one cup of milk to the warm water. Milk is supposed to act as a moisturizer.
  • Apply good moisturizer at least two times over the dry heels and feet. A thick layer of Cocoa butter, or Vaseline or any other moisturizer available in drug store. Rub it gently on the heel for fifteen to twenty minutes. Afterwards wash your feet in warm water and dab it with clean cloth.
  • Since the skin of heels become thick as it dries, first you have to exfoliate the skin. Use pumice stone for this purpose. Gentle scrubbing for few minutes before bathing is sufficient. But be careful when there are cracks as overdoing may lead to bleeding.
  • Take two ripe bananas; mash them finely to form banana pulp. Apply it on the dry heels and leave it for ten to fifteen minutes.
  • Wear proper fitting shoes.
  • Eat food rich in vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids as well as Zinc. A multivitamin tablet may contain the required daily requirement of these minerals and vitamins. Vitamin E rich food includes nuts, wheat germ, whole grain, green vegetables. Flax seeds, flax seed oil and fish are rich source of omega fatty acids.
  • Avoid walking with barefoot.
