What Is Ulcerative Stomatitis? Its Causes And Home Remedies

Stomatitis refers to sore mouth or inflammation of the linings of the oral cavity. Ulcerative stomatitis or aphthous ulcers are a variant of stomatitis which is characterized by formation of painful ulcers in the mouth. While there are a variety of causes associated with formation of mouth sores, there are some simple treatment options including use of supplements and simple home remedies that can help in the prompt management of the condition.

Ulcerative stomatitis refers to inflammation of the oral cavity with appearance of ulcers which are painful. While in most cases ulcerative stomatitis is acute, some cases of chronic ulcerative stomatitis have been recorded.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis is an autoimmune disorder however acute ulcerative stomatitis is linked to faulty dietary practices, nutritional deficiencies or even inappropriate dental treatment.

Ulcerative stomatitis is very common and it is prevalent in about 20% of the adult population. The condition is characterized by painful ulcers that are present along the inner lining of cheeks and lips, on the tongue and gums. Acute aphthous ulcers last for a couple of weeks, while chronic canker sores may last longer than a couple of months.

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency is considered to be one of the leading causes of ulcers in the oral cavity.
  • Gastrointestinal ailments like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis are also linked with the formation of ulcers in the oral cavity.
  • Individuals suffering from chronic ailments or individuals with compromised immunity are also prone to development of canker sores in the mouth.
  • Ill- fitted dentures or allergy to certain types of foods are also associated with the appearance of ulcers in the mouth.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis is an autoimmune condition which is characterized by presence of specific antibodies against keratinocyte nuclei on the squamous epithelial cells in the oral cavity.

Ulcerative Stomatitis Symptoms

The condition is characterized by presence of painful ulcers in the oral cavity.

The pain associated with these ulcers is aggravated on consumption of spicy or hot food and is relieved by consuming something cold or bland. Halitosis or bad breath from the mouth may be observed in some cases.

Home Remedies For Ulcerative Stomatitis

Here are some simple home remedies and natural treatment for management of ulcers in the mouth,

  • Add a spoon of salt, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide to a glass of warm water and rinse the mouth with this solution. This will speed up the healing process and also alleviate the pain associated with canker sores.
  • Dabbing milk of magnesia on the ulcer is also considered to be useful.
  • Local application of peppermint essential oil directly on the ulcers can also hasten healing. Some experts suggest applying licorice extract on the ulcers.
  • Ulcers in the mouth are also caused due to nutritional deficiencies hence include nutritional  supplements  like vitamin B12, zinc, iron and folic acid in the regular diet.
  • Some believe aphthous ulcers are linked to gluten sensitivity and food allergies. It is recommended to avoid gluten by avoiding bread, wheat, wheat flakes, etc in the diet.
