Usually the swell is soft and not painful. Swollen lymph nodes may or may not be abnormal, but you need to be careful about the cause of swell particularly in the groin area as it may take a serious turn if it doesn’t cure on its own.

What Causes Swollen Lymph Nodes In Groin?

There are various factors that may lead to the swelling of lymph nodes. The two primary factors are infections and injuries.

  • Infections: Swollen lymph nodes in the groin are commonly caused by bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic infections in the genitals, groin, or thigh. The Streptococcus bacteria can cause the lymphatic channel to swell. Likewise viral infections like glandular fever can cause the lymph glands in the groin to swell. Skin infections like cellulitis, boils, and skin abscesses may also affect the groin lymph nodes to swell.
  • Sexually transmitted infections: The lymph nodes in the groin also get swollen because of some sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis, genital herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and warts
  • Injuries: Sometimes serious injuries to the legs, genital areas or the foot can impact the lymph nodes in the groin.
  • Cancer: A cancer of the lymphatic system may lead to swelling of the lymph nodes in groin. Cancer may cause the lymphocytes in the nodes to undergo malignant changes. This may lead to tumors that can enlarge the lymph nodes.
  • Hydrocele: Sometimes the closing between the abdomen and the scrotum fail toclose causing fluid to drain from the abdomen to the scrotum.
This causes the lymph nodes to swell.
  • Inguinal hernia: When a soft tissue of the intestines protrudes into the scrotum through a weak part of the abdomen, it leads to a disease called hernia. This condition can also cause the lymph nodes to grow in size.
