What Causes Nail Psoriasis? Its Symptoms And Natural Remedies

Nail psoriasis is a variation of psoriasis of the skin. Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that leads to the appearance of raised patches of dry skin. These scales can be red or get silvery scales. In case the nails are affected, the nails develop irregular contours, with pitting or thickening of nails.

Most people, who have psoriasis on the skin, develop it on the nails too. In very rare cases, people develop psoriasis of the nails without having the condition at all. This percentage is roughly only 5 per cent. Another condition noticed is psoriatic arthritis.

Patients who have psoriatic arthritis tend to get psoriasis of the nails.

The main cause of nail psoriasis is the condition of psoriasis – arthritic or of the skin. Research is still on how exactly does psoriasis affects the nails exactly but genetics plays a role along with environmental and immunological factors. If you have a family history of psoriasis, you stand a good chance of getting it and it’s not contagious.

Each of these symptoms has a different medical name. Most of these symptoms need medical attention.

Natural Remedies For Nail Psoriasis

  • Medicated creams like topical anti fungal creams can help the nail get better faster. There are also creams with vitamin D derivatives that are considered helpful for psoriasis of the nails.
  • Oral medications that are given for psoriasis can also help psoriasis of the nails.
  • Another treatment, known as PUVA, is also recommended for psoriasis of the nails. In this treatment, Psoralen is used with long wave ultraviolet radiation.

Along with the medical options, you can also try some basic care or home remedies which could provide some relief.

  • A warm bath for your nails, with some tar oil, can be helpful. Dry the nails gently and then apply, again very gently, moisturizer. Use the proportion of about 3 caps full to a basin full of water.
  • Coconut oil and olive oil are both helpful in helping the skin with psoriasis heal better. Try organic soaps with coconut oil to include it often in your daily routine.
  • Increase your intake of vitamin D, through supplements. Ensure that your doctor is aware of this before you do it because you would not want additional complications of too much vitamin D.
  • A bath with sea salt flakes is also known to provide relief to the redness of the psoriasis skin.
  • Keep your nails short. Avoid further damage of tears and break by keeping the length manageable. Wear gloves while working if need be.
  • You can also gently file your nail and apply nail polish if you want your nails to look better.
