The tailbone or coccyx is a triangular shaped tiny bone located at the end of the vertebral column. It is made of five bone segments and hence can get bruised or broken easily. A forceful injury can cause it to get fractured or dislocated and the pain can be severe or mild depending on the seriousness of the injury. Owing to a broader pelvis, women are more susceptible to tailbone injury.
Bruised Tailbone Symptoms
The most common symptom of a bruised tailbone is pain. The pain is felt both while standing and sitting.
In some cases, it can severely affect the bowel movement as defecating becomes a painful exercise. The pain gets aggravated when additional pressure is exerted on the tail bone, especially when trying to sit.
What Causes A Bruised Coccyx?
The tailbone can get bruised because of several reasons. In most of the cases, it happens because of a direct trauma on the area. Some common reasons include:
- A fall from an elevated place with the back facing the hard surface can injure the coccyx.
- A direct blow to the tailbone in games like football etc may result in a coccyx injury.
- During childbirth, the pelvis expands causing the coccyx to get damaged.
- Sometimes activities like cycling or rowing can strain the coccyx causing the tailbone to get injured.
- Other associated causes of tailbone bruises include spine injury, bone spurs, tumors nerve root compression, and spine infections.
Home Remedies To Heal A Bruised Tailbone
The foremost goal of treating bruised tailbone is to reduce pain. This can be managed to a great extent at home. The following can help reduce pain considerably:
- The best first aid treatment is applying ice and heat to the affected region.
- Coccyx pain can also be relieved by physical therapy. After an injury, lie on the ground with your back facing the ground. Lift one leg, keeping the other straight and gently stretch it across the length of the body. Once done with, you can repeat the same process with another leg. After exercising for half an hour, your pain would subside gradually.
- Another good physical exercise is walking. However, you need to avoid riding a bicycle, swimming, or running so that no additional strain is exerted on the lower back until the injury cures completely.
- Once you injure your tailbone, you must avoid sitting for too long so that you don’t pressure the coccyx area too much. Always try to sit on a hard surface on alternate buttocks in order to disperse the pain evenly.
Though home remedies can be extremely effective, it works only if the injury happens to be mild. In case of severe injuries, the pain may become unbearable. Under such circumstances, it is advisable to seek immediate medical attention.
