What Causes Bone Spurs In Shoulder? Symptoms And Home Remedies

A bone spur is an overgrowth. The most common term for this disease is osteophyte. This type of overgrowth can happen in any part of the body, and also in the shoulders. Bone spurs rarely occur because of congenital reasons.

When the shoulder bone joint becomes unstable, it may lead to this abnormal condition. The shoulder joints usually get unstable after a serious injury to the shoulder or injuries caused by repetitive motion or when the ligament in the shoulder joint gets loose.

It can also be caused due to inflammation around the shoulder inflicted by degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) or tendinitis.

Because of the inflammation, bone forming cells tend to deposit bone in the region, causing a bony overgrowth or spur.

Bone Spur In Shoulder Symptoms

Bone spurs on shoulders can rub against the rotator cuff that helps control the movements of the shoulder. This friction can lead to swelling (tendinitis). In due course, the friction may tear the rotator cuff and lead to progressive pain.

The pain would increase with certain motions such as every time a person raises his arms over his head or tries to reach out for something with an overstretched arm.

Home Remedies For Bone Spur Pain Relief

There are many treatment options for bone spurs in the shoulder.

The first course of treatment should be ice compression for 20 minutes after completion of a stressful activity. This would cause the inflammation to subside. Ideally, this treatment should be carried out three to four times a day. In severe cases, it is advisable to replace ice with a hot pad.

Some home remedies for bone spurs are as follows:

  • Hot flax seed can help relieve the pain in quick time. Heat some flax seeds and stuff it in a rough bandage like cloth.
Next, bind the cloth around the affected shoulder bone joints. Within a few minutes you can get comfort. Do this for a few days to improve the condition of your shoulder bone spurs.
  • Applying a mixture of arnica oil and chamomile herbs decoction can be very helpful. Apply the mixture everyday three to four times on the affected joints on a regular basis. This treatment can cure the affliction in about a weeks’ time.
  • Bone spurs symptoms in shoulders tend to aggravate after a physical activity. So, having warm baths with a pinch of Epsom salt after every laborious work can do a world of good. If you practice it routinely at least three times a day, the flare-up will subside after a week or two.
  • Omega -3 fatty acids is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties. As these acids can be found in plenty in fishes like sardine, mackerel, and salmon, you need to include these in your daily diet to enhance the intake of this nutrient. Though many doctors recommend Omega -3 fatty acids supplements, relying on home remedies is the safest way to get relief from bone spurs in shoulders.
