Gray Hair Causes
The hair assumes a gray color when melanin, keratin, and other cells that produce colors stop the production of pigments. Naturally occurring substances and chemicals in the body such as hydrogen peroxide can also bleach the hair color. The main culprit behind gray hair is heredity. People generally start having gray hair from their late thirties, and become more prominent when they reach their fifties. As people get older, the pigment present in the root of the hair is produced in lesser amounts, until no pigment is produced. This causes a semi-transparent appearance of the hair.
A condition experienced earlier than this time is considered premature. In some cases, it may be a symptom of a nutritional deficiency. This is called premature hair graying. It is surprising to note that stress does not play a factor in causing gray hair. Some other causes have been identified:
- Vitiligo. This is characterized by overall lose of melanocytes, resulting to light patches on the skin.
- Werner syndrome.
- Alopecia areata. The darker, thicker hairs stop growing, causing the gray hairs to stand out.
- Vitamin B 12 deficiency anemia. Vitamin B 12 is abundant in eggs, milk, and meat. It can also be due to diseases of the small intestine, which include celiac disease, fish tapeworms, Crohn’s disease, or bacterial overgrowth.
- Thyroid or pituitary gland problems. Conditions such as Hashimoto’s disease, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and Grave’s diseases have been previously linked with gray hair.
- Low bone density levels.
- Premature menopause.
Home Remedies for Gray Hair Reversal
Graying hair is part of aging. It is a degenerative process that accompanies other changes as people grow old. Graying hair is not a disease; therefore it does not need treatment. There are, however, some home remedies which individuals can use to bring back that youthful glow.
- Hair growth is usually parallel with healthy blood and kidney function. Foods that were proven to improve the functions of these organs include seaweeds, molasses, black sesame seeds, wheat grass, chlorophyll, and nettles. These should only be consumed in moderate amounts.
- People with abundant gray hair should avoid foods that have high salt content. Likewise, excessive meat and dairy products hasten the growth of gray hair.
- Curry leaves. High in nutritional value, curry leaves can prevent hair graying and help rejuvenate growth.
- Hibiscus. The leaves when made into a poultice can be massaged into the hair like a shampoo.
- Henna. A widely popular hair color alternative, henna also has moisturizing properties.
