Stress Fracture on Foot and Its Symptoms
Generally, stress fracture happens when the muscles are already exhausted enough to absorb more stress and shock due to an extreme activity. The stress is transferred to the nearby bone which results to fracture.
Following are some of the symptoms felt when one is suffering from foot stress fracture.
- Intermittent pain: Usually, a stress fracture is accompanied with pain and this only subsides when at rest.
- Deterioration: If the fracture is not given attention or untreated, the pain will likely to progress. The pain can be felt when one has started to walk or run.
- Swelling and sensitivity: Swelling of the affected area may be noticed and this may signify foot fracture. Also, the foot becomes sensitive as pain is sensed when touched.
- Bruising: If one cannot bear weight on his/her foot means the fracture has become worsened. One may notice bruises on the affected part.

Stress fracture is a small hairline break on the bone which occurs commonly on foot and legs. Constant stress and pressure inflicted on foot makes it prone to fracture. While other types of fractures are responding well to traditional measures, some may require surgery.
When one is required to undertake surgery, recovery time may be determined based on the results of the post-surgery X-rays. Doctors recommend one to do following treatment regimen in order to recover immediately and prevent future problems.
- Take rest. Avoid doing any activity that causes stress fracture. Normally, it takes six to eight weeks for a fracture to heal. One can do some alternative exercises such as swimming and cycling as these do not place more stress on foot.
- Use protective footwear to decrease the stress on foot. This may in the form of stiff-soled shoe, wooden-soled sandal or a detachable short-leg brace shoe.
How to Treat a Stress Fracture Foot
Treatment for foot stress fracture varies depending on how severe the damage is. When the fracture is severe then it may require a surgical intervention. But if the fracture is mild then this can be managed by taking a rest. It is recommended that one is restricted to do some activities that cause further stress on the affected foot.
Since the stress fracture on foot does not heal properly, here are some tips to follow so as the fracture cannot become a chronic problem in the future.
- Eat healthy food. It is essential that one must eat foods rich in calcium to help in strengthening the bones.
- Do not immediately go back to intense workout when recovering as this cause more damage to the affected foot.
- When pain and swelling is seen and felt during an activity, stop the activity and consult a doctor at once.
