There is a number of potentially life threatening reasons why a patient experiences pain in the left chest. Most of these reasons involve the heart. The heart is located in the left part of the chest. Thus, if the patient feels pricking pain in this part of the chest, it should not be taken for granted. This could mean that the patient is having a problem with his or her heart.

Chest pain at the left side is considered to be among the symptoms that should never be disregarded.

In fact, if the pain persists for a few minutes and the patient experiences breathing difficulties, he or she must be brought to a medical facility as soon as possible because this could signal an impending heart attack or stroke. The heart attack is caused by blocked blood vessels.

Angina is another possible reason. This is caused by narrowing of the blood vessels, resulting in decreased supply of oxygenated blood to the heart. If there is a tear in the aortal lining, the patient can experience aortic dissection which can cause massive hemorrhage. This is because the vital organs are deprived of amply blood as it is the aorta that brings this to these organs.

Pinching pain should not be disregarded when it occurs in the left chest. Aside from heart causes, the pain might even be because of other reasons. One possible reason is collapsed lungs. This happens when the lungs are unable to expand caused by conditions like change in pressure. This is also potentially life threatening in that the patient can be suffocated as the lungs are unable to expand.

  • To deal with pinching pain, the patient should first learn what the underlying cause of the pain is.
    This will ensure that proper treatment is provided.
  • Do not try to self-diagnose and self-medicate. Always consult a doctor and follow prescriptions and other instructions.
  • Patients who need emergency care may be given oxygen to help them breathe.
  • Always make sure that the patient is comfortable and is not wearing restrictive clothing or accessories.

  • Chest pain induced by drugs like cocaine.
