Bursae are small sacs that contain synovial fluid. They are located at the point where muscle or tendon glides over the bone. They help in smooth, frictionless and painless normal movement.
Inflammation of bursa is called as bursitis. If the bursae around hip are affected, it is called as bursitis of the hip.
Bursitis can be acute or chronic. Acute bursitis will last for few weeks. Chronic bursitis is bursitis that is recurrent and lasts longer.
Causes Of Bursitis Of The Hip
The main causes of bursitis of the hip include:
- Repeated movements or stress on hip joint may irritate the bursae and cause inflammation.
- Rheumatoid arthritis.
- Injury to hip joint.
- Bone spurs that develop in hip joint may irritate bursa.
- Bacterial infection of the joint.
- Uneven length of the two legs puts more stress on hip joint.
- Aged persons are likely to develop bursitis.
- Obese people are more prone to develop bursitis of hip.
- Regional muscle dysfunction can lead to bursitis.
Symptoms Of Hip Bursitis
Following are some of the common symptoms of bursitis of the hip:
- There will be swelling, pain and tenderness in affected hip joint.
- Pain is aggravated by lying on affected side or while getting up in bed or after prolonged sitting. Sitting on hard surface puts more stress on the tissues around hip joint.
- Pain can be sharp initially which may become dull and aching at later stage.
- Stiffness and difficult movement of the affected hip joint.
- In chronic bursitis of the hip, bursa thickens due to chronic inflammation leading to limited range of movement. Atrophy and weakness of muscle can be noticed.
Diagnosis: Diagnosis is done on the basis of medical history and physical examination of the patient. X-ray may be advised to rule out other conditions. Doctor may advise MRI if necessary.
Natural Remedies For Hip Bursitis
- Take complete rest.
- Apply ice to reduce swelling.
- If necessary medication will be given to reduce pain and swelling.
- Antibiotics are given if bursitis has occurred due to bacterial infection.
- Avoid positions that may put stress on the affected joint.
- Avoid repeated movements.
- Do not sit in one position for long time.
- Avoid sitting on hard surfaces.
- Take walk for short period of time after every one hour.
- Do warm up and stretching exercises before doing any strenuous activity. Repeat stretching exercises at the end of exercise regime.
- Maintain your ideal weight.
- Avoid sleeping on the side of affected hip. If you are sleeping on other side, keep pillow between two legs.
- Use proper shoes to minimize stress, after consulting you physiotherapist if you have one leg shorter than other.
Exercises For Bursitis Of The Hip
Physical therapy is extremely useful to strengthen the muscles and reduce the pain. Aim is to improve range of movement, stabilization and gait training.
To stretch your buttock muscles lie on your back and bend your knees. Keep your left ankle on right knee and hold your left ankle with right hand and left knee with left hand and pull it towards chest and hold it for fifteen seconds. Repeat the procedure three times for each leg.
It is always better to learn exercises from physiotherapist who will teach you the exact movements to get maximum benefit of the prescribed exercises.
If conservative therapy fails then one may require surgical treatment.
