Watery Eyes Syndrome Treatment: What Are Its Causes & Symptoms?

Tear film which is a complex but important physical phenomenon helps in corneal lubrication, besides providing immunologic protection and nourishment to our eyes. However, overflowing of tears is not a natural phenomenon but a health disorder.

Excessive watery eyes condition is caused when the body produces unusually high amount of tears, affecting tear drainage system. Although this is not a serious health issue it can be a source of discomfort. Overflow of tears constantly interfere with vision and skin around the eyes gets excoriated due to regular wiping of tears. This ocular syndrome may also be associated with some underlying conditions.

Symptoms Of Watery Eyes Syndrome

Watery eyes syndrome is characterized by excess tears that make the eyes look glassy. The excessiveness of tear leads to its overflowing or dripping from eyes. Most often overflowing of tears occurs naturally in windy conditions or when a foreign particle settles in the eye.

However, natural conditions do not lead to constant watering of the eyes. It can be caused by some underlying conditions only. Some additional watery eyes symptoms include burning or itching in the eyes and swollen eyelids.

If the condition is triggered by cold or sinuses, patients can have pain and redness in the eyes along with tenderness around the regions of sinuses.

What Are The Causes Of Watery Eyes?

Watery eyes condition is usually caused by ocular inflammation and irritation of the entropion or trichiasis. In elderly people, a blocked outflow tract of tear is responsible for triggering the disorder. Other health conditions that may induce blocked tear outflow tract related watery eyes include infections such as rhinitis, conjunctivochalasis and impaired function of nasolacrimal duct in infants.

Poor surgical reconstruction of nasolacrimal duct after an injury can also cause eyes to shed unusually large amount of tears. Facial fracture involving nasoethmoid or maxillary fractures or an injury sustained around nose or eyelid can also potentially cause overflow of tears.

Certain allergies and eyelid related health disorders can also trigger watery eyes conditions.

Treatment Options For Watery Eyes

Usually watery eyes condition can be cured by specific eye drops. Sometimes, warm compresses can also help to improve the condition. If watery eyes condition is triggered by entropion or ectropion, lid repair treatment is usually recommended. You can also undergo punctal irrigation therapy to treat the condition.

In case the affliction is caused due to nasolacrimal defects in infants, doctors generally adopt nasolacrimal duct probing followed by tube replacement. This surgical process is known as dacryocystorhinostomy and it is carried out by joining lacrimal sac and nasal mucosa together. This surgical procedure removes the disorder by restoring lacrimal drainage.

If the watery eyes condition is induced by a foreign particle consulting an ophthalmologist is your best option. In such cases it is advisable not to rub the eyes as it may aggravate the condition.
