  • The intestines, may it be the small intestine or the large intestine inflames due to a variety of causes. These include bacterial and viral infection, functional causes, and inflammatory causes.
  • Enteritis is the medical term that is used when there is inflammation in the small intestine’s mucous lining while enterocolitis is used when both intestines are affected.

  • Mild to severe abdominal pain or cramps.
  • Nausea that may be followed by vomiting. Vomiting alone is also another symptom.
  • Low or high fever which may often be accompanied by chills.
  • Bloating and loss of appetite which can lead to weight loss.
  • Fatigue or the overall feeling of tiredness.
  • Bloody stools or black stools.
  • Tenesmus or the constant need or feeling to have a bowel movement.
  • Dehydration.
  • Constipation. This symptom can be partnered with diarrhea and occurs alternately.
  • Stools that have or are covered with mucous.
  • Anemia
  • Arthritis and mild to severe back pain.

How to Treat Intestinal Inflammation

Treating inflamed intestines usually depends on what had caused it or the disorder that has developed.

Below are some of the common treatments used.

  • For mild symptoms, patients are advised to drink lots of clear fluids like water and tea. Soup and lemonade can also be used.
  • Natural or herbal remedies can also be used for mild symptoms. These remedies include cabbage juice, soda water and lemon, and flaxseed and chamomile extracts.
  • For severe symptoms, hospitalization is needed. Antibiotics may be prescribed along with intravenous fluids and blood transfusion.
  • There are some disorders like the IBS or the Irritable Bowel Syndrome that have no cure. What is done by doctors to patients with this condition is give them medications that would help in relieving the symptoms associated with the disorder.
