Perricone diet is a special diet program designed by Dr Nicholas Perricone, who is a Professor of Medicine at the Michigan State University College. Dr. Perricone in his book, the Perricone Prescription, has reported that certain foods can result in inflammation and water retention which is linked with premature aging and obesity. The Perricone diet is an anti wrinkle diet and is considered beneficial in ensuring a healthy and glowing skin. This diet is also considered beneficial in the management of acne.
Perricone Prescription Diet Foods
Various individuals have reported that the Perricone diet is very beneficial, especially for females who suffer from a host of health problems due to inadequate nutrition.
Further, there have been several reports of the diet aiding the process of weight loss, though the diet regimen is not specifically designed for weight loss programs.
However the diet prescription suffers from considerable amount of criticism. Certain suggested foods are very expensive and difficult to find while the diet has to be supported with tropical treatments, which are also considered very expensive. However, overall the Perricone diet is considered to have a positive impact on the skin and overall health of an individual.
Dr Perricone Diet Menu Plan
The focus of the diet program is to limit the intake of saturated fats, refined food products including refined sugar and other foods that have a high glycemic index. Though the diet program is for 28 days, a 3 day diet program is recommended to begin with, which is considered to be highly beneficial in improving the overall skin health and also enhancing energy levels.
The food prescriptions for the Perricone diet include,
- Egg whites and whole eggs or 6 ounce of broiled salmon.
- Cooked oatmeal.
- Cantaloupe, fresh berries or green apple.
- Romaine lettuce along with steamed vegetables like asparagus, spinach or broccoli.
- Chicken breast cooked in extra virgin olive oil with very little salt or low salt turkey breast.
- Hazelnut and almonds.
Consuming at least 48 ounces of spring water each day along with the above mentioned foods is also considered to be equally important. These foods are loaded with anti-oxidants which help in destroying free radicals that are responsible for wrinkles and aging. Further, these foods are low in saturated fats which help improve the tone and texture of the skin.
Perricone Diet For Acne
As a continuation to the Perricone Diet, another booked called the Acne Prescription was published in 2003 by Dr Nicholas Perricone. As per the book, there is a strong correlation ship between diet and acne and this treatment is meant for individuals suffering from acne who have older and drier skin.
As per this diet prescription, Dr Perricone suggested foods that are anti-inflammatory and therefore prevent the formation of acne. The intake of foods that are pro-inflammatory should be limited. Apple is considered to have strong anti-inflammatory properties while banana has pro-inflammatory properties and hence should be avoided among individuals with acne.
