This article provides information about how acupuncture works and its benefits in the management of high blood pressure.

As per a recent study published in a monthly magazine Circulation, acupuncture is as effective in reducing blood pressure as is single drug therapy. The magazine reported the findings of a study conducted on over 160 patients from China and Germany.

The findings of the study indicated that acupuncture can help in reducing blood pressure by about 3 to 5mmHg over a period of one and a half month. This is considered to be more effective than aggressive lifestyle change like restriction of salt and regular exercise.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese approach of management of a wide range of disease and ailments. Acupuncture has been claimed to be very effective in management of hypertension, especially moderate to mild hypertension. As per acupuncture, there are invisible pathways called meridians that connect various body organs and parts. Obstruction of these pathways may result in disease or pain. Acupuncture therapy uses fine needles to stimulate these pathways and send trigger impulses to the brain. In this way acupuncture is known to not only control pain but also regulate cardiovascular system.

Can Acupuncture Reduce High Blood Pressure?

Various study reports have validated the effectiveness of Acupuncture therapy in the management of hypertension or high blood pressure. Some of the research studies include the following,

  • In a study published in Circulation, an online magazine, 160 patients from China and Germany were divided into case and control group randomly to received acupuncture therapy.
Both groups underwent 22 sessions for 30 minutes each, over a period of six weeks. The case group observed a reduction of systolic blood pressure by 5mmHg and diastolic pressure by 3 mmHg.

Acupuncture For High Blood Pressure Reviews

Currently there are different studies that are underway using human subjects to confirm the effect of acupuncture therapy on treatment of high blood pressure. However, experts believe that there is more to the acupuncture treatment regimen then mere placebo effect. Further, conventional prescription medications are associated with a host of side effects and acupuncture therapy can be used in conjunction with conventional therapy to enhance effectiveness and make the treatment regimen more cost effective.

Unfortunately, acupuncture therapy has certain limitations. Blood pressure levels return back to their original levels after discontinuation of acupuncture therapy, which means that individuals might have to continue using the therapy consistently. In addition, various reports have suggested that only qualified and well trained acupuncture therapists can identify the correct needle sites and incorrect selection of trigger sites may render the entire therapy useless.

More research is required to verify the exact way in which acupuncture therapy works along with identifying its limitations and how it can be used in conjunction with conventional therapy.
